Acoustic effects in the working fluid of vapor compressors create pressure and flow rate fluctuations that influence power consumption, volumetric efficiency, and noise level. Geometric tuning of compressor manifolds can utilize these pulsationsto improve performance and reduce noise. This article documents the development of a computer program, the Compressor Manifold Modeling and Analysis Program (CMMAP), that determines the acoustic response characteristics of a manifold system by cascadingseries and branch connected discrete elements into a system model. Plane wave theory is used for the element mathematical model, and transfer matrix theory is used for the coupling operations. CMMAP is a Windows-based program developed using MicrosoftVisual Basic 5.0, Professional Edition. Particular emphasis was placed on making the program user friendly and robust. The latest Windows 95/Windows NT graphical user interface standards were used. Modeling techniques, theoretical background, and programoperation were documented in a context sensitive Help program. Many features of the program may be applied to other component design software applications, including the techniques used to present results and generate, display, and edit model schematics.
