In January I arranged an interview with Alan Crawford of the LSC Group, a leading Logistics Solutions Provider whose clients include Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, SAAB, Boeing and Lockheed Martin. I went to talk to him about a recent acquisition by the LSC Group, a process planning business based around a computer system which provides the opportunity to Design for Cost. LOCAM is an evolving PC-based system developed for use in the development process of high volume products. In explaining the use of Locam, Alan Crawford described a process planning tool capable of optimising the design and manufacturing specification of a product against cost parameters. To clarify its use, Alan briefed me on a number of examples of the application of Locam involving the manufacture of automotive components where the relationship between the supplier and the design specifiers is of critical importance.
