Upon their arrival at the University of Ottawa, first-year engineering students attend a three-hour lecture given by the dean of engineering. Tyseer Aboulnasr, P.Eng., has been criticized for her somewhat forbidding message about the 10 rules for survival in engineering. "People say I'm too tough, but I want the students to have the tine story from day one, the 45-year old dean says. "I tell them if they want to party, go ahead, but wait until the second term. If you want to make it, you have to start out on the right foot!"Aboulnasr has more than a passing interest in seeing students survive the rigors of first-year. While working as an associate professor at the university between 1995-96, she became concerned about low retention levels of first-year students. "On close examination, we realized that losing students had more to do with the absence of good work habits than technical competence," she says. "The first four to five weeks are a blur for some. In this faculty, things move pretty fast. By the time they start paying attention, they can't catch up."
