This article describes the design ideas of the author for a gas turbine engine - known as a Disc Turbine. The Disc Turbine uses a series of thin discs closely spaced apart as the means of providing a power unit. The proposed engine is configured as a conventional gas turbine with a compressor, combustion unit, turbine unit, and an output drive system. The blades and guide vanes used in a conventional gas turbine are replaced by a series of discs, which are caused to rotate by a stream of gas acting on the spaces between the discs - the gas being provided by the burning of fuel, which may be kerosene, oil, or propane gas. The discs are arranged in two or more rotor stacks of differing diameters to provide, like most turbines, stages. For the rotors, two formats are described - one uses a plain disc, the other a disc/diaphragm configuration. Three shafts are shown for the main rotors, the output drive from the turbine, and the drive to the 'vane' type compressor. These shafts are driven by reduction gearing from the turbine shaft and contained in a gear box which forms part of the engine assembly. A diagrammatic illustration of the operating principle and a design for a Disc Gas Turbine for Automotive applications is presented.
