Activation of Ni electrodes was performed by spontaneous deposition of Ir from HC1 solutions of IrCl3. The efficiency of deposition has been found to depend on the aging of the precursor as well as of its aqueous solution, as revealed by IR-Vis qualitative analysis. The electrochemical behavior of activated electrodes was studied by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and quasi-stationary polarization curves for hydrogen evolution in alkaline solutions. CV shows hydrogen adsorption/desorption peaks whose magnitude is proportional to the amount of deposited Ir. Tafel plots show slopes decreasing from ca. 120 mV, typical of bare Ni, down to ca. 40 mV typical of pure Ir.
