Having retired from teaching design and technology at Claires Court Secondary School recently, I resurrected an idea that I had 10 years previously, says John Blay. My idea was to enhance an existing product, rather than create a new product from scratch. The product chosen, as I wanted to avoid complicated devices, was a simple spirit level hand tool. The idea was to provide an audible output from the spirit level, thus enabling it to be used by persons with limited eyesight. The level could also be used in inaccessible locations or where it was out of the line of sight, e.g. a high shelf.
