Instant Replay: The growing use of video in engineering and design education

The recent international conference on Engineering and Product Design Education (E&PDE08) in Barcelona saw a showcase of innovative teaching and learning methods in engineering and product design education and research into teaching and student learning. The conference was also an opportunity for academics and practitioners to share perspectives on good practice in engineering and design education. One clear outcome of the conference was the growing use of video in engineering and design education. Video is being used innovatively to improve the quality of teaching and to improve the learning experience for students. An entire session in the E&PDE08 conference was dedicated to using video in the studio and in the lecture theatre to record CAD, CAE, physical model making, hand drawing techniques and, of course, traditional lectures. It is also being used by students in assessments at university. It is clear there is a growing trend of teachers and practitioners using video to capture processes. The rationale for such a growth comes through the need for tutors to be in more places at once or to teach remotely, the desire to minimise the need to repeat lectures or demonstrations for students who are absent or late, or for the benefit of students who simply want to go through the material again in their own time and at their own pace. This trend is also mirrored by industry, with software companies using online videos to demonstrate the capabilities of their products, and practitioners using video to highlight their competencies with particular techniques. This article discusses the changing face of video in engineering and product design education and training in universities, and also in industry.
