Joseph Steele discusses the issues surrounding the design of a low cost heliostat gearbox in the Republic of South Africa. With great international focus on dwindling energy supplies and the effects of fossil fuels on the environment, the renewable energy industry is becoming of increasing importance. One source of renewable energy is concentrating solar power (CSP) which uses mirrors to focus sunlight using mirror assemblies called heliostats, toward a target power tower. The more established CPS devices being single axis parabolic troughs running in linear arrays across the desert. The domestic market does not usually track PVC (photovoltaic cell) arrays to follow the sun because of cost and the need for maintenance simplicity. PVCs produce direct electricity via a photovoltaic surface.
