摘要

Joe Rowley discusses the gap between men and women entering the engineering professions and uses a case study to demonstrate how allocating female engineers can make a project a success. "I think we have got to the point in the profession where there is no longer a bar to women entering, but the reality is there simply aren't many of us." As the first female to be elected as President of the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), few people are better placed to recognise the challenges facing women entering engineering than Jean Venables. As one of the few women in the country to study engineering, Jean Venables graduated from Imperial College, London, with a BSc in Civil Engineering in 1969, followed by an MSc in 1974 and entered an industry where women were not only largely unknown as engineers, but were often actively discouraged from entering the profession.
