摘要

John Boult presents an insight into the experiences of design professionals who have chosen to balance part-time further education with full-time employment. "Old dogs can be taught new tricks and a new learning environment helps keep the mind open to change and (most importantly) implementing new ideas" - a comment made by Nick Tyrell when asked why he had taken up the big challenge of a part-time MA at Brunei. But back to the back-story: The level of the game is being raised - everywhere. It is even said that MasterChef quarter-finalists from four years ago, would find it hard placed to be even selected as potential contestants in today's shows. Athletes and sportspeople, looking at the next World championships or World Cups, equally have to contend with levels of skill, performance and fitness much higher than their colleagues of only a few seasons back. This relentless upping of goals similarly exists in business, technology, engineering and design. The question, however, is do people working in design and engineering prepare themselves, through training and personal development, in the same professional manner that a Usain Bolt, Chris Hoy or Rebecca Adlington does for their fields of endeavour? The evidence suggests not.
