Designing for End of Life. By Ben Walsh PhD MSci MRSC, Centre for Remanufacturing & Reuse. The Centre for Remanufacturing and Reuse is a government funded initiative, tasked with reducing the UK's environmental impact by encouraging the reuse and remanufacturing of products. It is important to make clear that reuse and remanufacture is associated with products, and should not be confused with the reuse of materials, which is recycling. This is important because, comparatively, reuse is generally more environmentally friendly, more profitable (even without government subsidies) and uses higher skilled workers. Our goal is to stimulate, where appropriate, the development of the reuse and the remanufacturing industry in the UK. To this end, we are engaging purchasers, policy makers, remanufacturers, academics and manufacturers.
