摘要

In his message on a national vision for engineering in Canada (see Engineering Dimensions, September/October 1995, p 19), CCPE chair Garry Wacker, P.Eng., claims that all other such issues as governance, practice of engineering, etc., "... are derivatives of a much more fundamental ... question: 'What are the societal perspectives and expectations of engineers'?" I agree and here's why. Engineers have excelled at designing and building our physical world. Unfortunately, this reality is often forgotten by the public we serve and even by ourselves. Our inherent pragmatic persona, which is consumed by technical details, has made many of us oblivious to the political aspects of our modern society. You may take exception with this statement, however the relative absence of engineers in the public decision-making arena demonstrates our profession's propensity to remain distant from the non-technical world. This situation is obviously improving, as more of us are speaking out on issues that affect our society; however, a stronger public advocacy role is required for our society to be better served.
