We still design great products, but now they are more likely to be made in China, India, or one of the other developing Asian countries, with a few in Eastern Europe. Forward planning by the business community seems to assume that this trend will continue and manufacturing in the UK is old hat. It is also assumed that the service industry will continue to grow to take up the slack. But the service industry is growing in other countries and competition is fierce. To completely replace manufacturing, the UK would have to have around 10 per cent of the world's service sector and at the moment it is stuck at about two per cent. The push is on to increase the share. However, looking a little further ahead can give a rather different set of priorities.
