A prominent civil engineer in the 19th and early 20th centuries, john Wolfe-Barry is probably best known for his work on London's Tower Bridge. John Wolfe Barry was the youngest son of well known architect Charles Barry (who designed the Houses of Parliament) and added the Wolfe to his surname in 1898. He studied under Sir John Hawkshaw, noted for his work on the Charing Cross and Cannon Street railways, with their bridges over the River Thames, and the East London Railway, which utilised Sir Marc Isambard Brunei's Thames Tunnel.
