Modern'smart meters'are now being installed in a number of countries,but the UK energy meter stock has not changed significantly in over a century-in marked contrast to many other technologies which have changed beyond recognition.Advanced metering technology has been talked about for 30 years in the UK,but the subject has been given a new impetus by the EU Energy End-Use Efficiency and Energy Services Directive,an Ofgem consultation and the 2006 Energy Review.
