India became the fourth-largest producer of crude steel in the world in 2010 and is expected to become the world's second-largest producer by 2015-16. India's crude steel production in 2010 reached 66.8 million tonnes, registering a growth of just 6.4 per cent over 2009. In 2009, crude steel production for the country was 62.8 million tonnes as compared to 2008, which was 55.1 million tonnes. Crude steel production capacity extended from 45.8 million tonnes in 2005 to 66.8 million tonnes per annum in 2010, according to World Steel Association (WSA) report. It is assumedthat the Indian crude steel capacity will reach about 124 million tonnes by 2012. It is further estimated that the crude steel production of the country may touch 180 million tonnes by 2019-20.
