Reduction in Consumption of Low Silica Limestone in Twin Hearth Furnace at Bhilai Steel Plant

Twin Hearth Furnace accounts for almost half of the total steel production of 5.3 Mtpa done at BSP. Moreover, for THF steelmaking, a very essential raw material required is low silica limestone which has a major techno-economic impact on the process also. The specific consumption of this limestone depends mainly on the silicon content of the hot metal and was around 12t for 0.8-1% Si initially. Consequently, a decrease in HM silicon content lead to a reduction in the limestone proportion of the charge mix by 1.5t. However, this caused severe deterioration in the operational parameters of THF like refractory lining, taphole life and health of the THF as a whole. This issue was resolved in a cost effective manner by the part use of raw dolomite as a cheap substitute for limestone which also rendered additional operational benefits. Subsequently, the performance of the THF improved leading to an annual savings to the tune of more than 5 crores per year.
