The leap in transaction prices in June has prompted us to make an upward revision to our average flat products' price forecast. Availability remains tight for both strip mill and plate products. The higher settlement for iron ore has encouraged the mills to push for increased transaction values. Moreover, the producers are also keen to recover the cost of zinc on coated products. The tight supply situation and input cost recovery leads us to believe that the peak values achieved in early 2005 will be surpassed towards the end of 2006. Supply of steel products to the European market remains relatively tight. Beams and hot-dipped galvanized sheet are among those most frequently cited for shortages. Mill lead-times have stretched out. Some steel producers are said to be late in making deliveries and material is scarce. Demand has been so intense that mills have been able to fill their order books quickly and be certain of hitting the target prices that they wanted. Distributors complain that they cannot get enough steel to meet their clients' demands. Stockholders in some European countries are struggling to keep the market supplied with structural steel products, because they cannot source all the sections, beams and merchant bars that they need.
