After upgradation of G-Blast furnace at Tata Steel in April 2005 resulted in enhanced Blast Furnace working volume from 1587m~3 to 2303m~3 and production from 1.2 MTPA to 1.8 MTPA, the performance of taphole became errratic with regular supplied taphole clay. Due to sghorl casting duration, non-uniform casting rate, inconsistent tap-hole length, drilling and self opening problems of taphole which resulted not only in increased workload at the cast house and safety hazards but also impacted the productivity negatively. Global taphole clay suppliers were invited to carry our trials with different taphole clays. Simultaneous with the trials some innovative tests were carried out in refractory lab on taphole clays supplied by different vendors in order to correlate properties with respect to their actual plant performance. This paper describes how different lab test results can predict the actual plant performance of taphole clay.
