Conventionally, blastfurnaces are used in the process of iron making. Mini Blast Furnaces were developed in India as a low cost alternative so that small entreprenesses could also become involved in the process of iron making. Blast Furnaces require a cooling system and Mini Blast Furnaces are normally provided with spray cooling or box cooler system. The refractory lining around box coolers was being done to suit the site conditions. The practice usually led to dislodging of bricks around the coolers and as a result the box coolers had to the sealed thereby reducing the cooling efficiency. Recently, MECON has developed a modern design of mini blastfurnace incorporating the use of high efficiency copperplate cooler system. After introduction of copper plate cooler, the refractory lining pattern has been modified to suit the higher cooling efficiency of the Blast Furnace. The modified design, which is the first of its kind for mini blastfurnaces, is expected to achive the blastfurnace campaign life of 7-8 years in place of 4 years being normally achieved now-a-days.
