Process improvement is a common focus in any steelmak-ing operation, and there are always areas of improvement in electric arc furnace (EAF) operations in particular. The inherent variability in raw material inputs means constant adjustments are necessary to optimize the operation of the furnace. These variables and the necessary operational changes make a scientific approach to process improvement and control very difficult, and trials can often have unintended consequences. This work will detail the progression of burner profile trials into a major burner equipment upgrade which had some unanticipated benefits in refractory life, electrode consumption, delta life and highlighted other areas for improvement.
