Had it not been for Sir Henry Bessemer, the daily commute of thousands of rail users might be very different. You might not even be offered sugar with your cup of tea. From his 10 railway-related patents to the 12 he was granted for sugar extraction and refining, Bessemer has helped to shape the modern world as we know it. As a founding member of the Iron and Steel Institute in 1869, Bessemer's name is synonymous with the materials - most notably for the Bessemer Process for producing steel, which transformed industry in the Victorian age.
