摘要

I first encountered ideas like "project", "engineering design", ''systems" and "project management" in the early years of World War II. I was "putting together" simple distillation and filtration systems for makers of certain alcoholic beverages, perfumes, and other liquids that were not on the proscribed list due to war shortage. As a new high school graduate, I did not have an engineering education and my technical knowledge was limited to amateur plumbing and electric wiring. An early incident in my "plumbing" experience convinced me that better planning and system design were needed even for such seat-of-the-pants design and assembly. After assembling a small portable distillation/filtration system designed by the only engineer in the company - our president and chief engineer, I delivered it by truck and prepared to install it on the third floor of the customer's factory. There was a small problem: it would not fit onto the elevator in the building! After considering "rigging it" into a third floor window with the aid of an expensive crane or sky hook, I decided that the better part of valor was to Disassemble it and RE-assemble the pieces on the third floor! Thus, I received, at age 16, a valuable lesson in the need for careful system design, planning, and project management in even these simplest of projects.
