This article describes the transition of ASEM to a self-supporting professional organization including the first 14 years of EMJ. This includes the story of my own way into the EM profession. The next section describes what I believe are the key tenets that underlie our profession. The concluding section looks to the future with an analysis of the fields strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats.
