As a high school student during WWII, I followed the war closely. I pasted my room with appropriate National Geographic maps of the war zones, and carved model airplanes that presented the correct silhouettes for training flight personnel in recognized aircraft types. In 1948, when I graduated from high school, I thought I would like to go to West Point. I took the screening test conducted for our Congressman by the Civil Service Commission to rank applicants for the military academies. I was second out of 35 applicants. The winner took Annapolis; I took West Point. In the eleventh grade, I had failed the admission test for West Point. I knew that my academic education was poor, but if I enlisted in the Army, I would be sent to the Army's prep school. If I passed the entrance exam, I would be discharged from the Army to enter West Point. If I failed, I would be committed to 4 years in the Army. As it happened, I passed the admission exam. However, my past education caught up with me at West Point. The combination of the Honor System and my poor spelling resulted in my being "found deficient in academics - English" at the end of my plebe year. My father had died while I was at West Point. He had been a member of the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU). When I returned home as very dejected 20-year old, the union gave me a place in the ILWU. I worked at night on the docks, and during the day, attended Los Angeles (L.A.) Harbor Junior College. My grades were good and I was admitted to University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) in the fall of 1953.
