Two questions come up: (1) Why wasn't I on the list? (2) Why was he on the list? The hundred best baseball players. The 10 worst dressed movie stars. The greatest generals. The richest people in the world. The oldest living person. Van Loons "Lives" included those the author chose from among the living and the dead, persons he wanted to talk to, but he also chose a wild card - the world s greatest inventor, and allowed some other decision maker to identify the winner, a recipient probably more surprised than many readers. And this third question probably also comes up - why did I get on the list? This happened to one of the co-editors while browsing through the list of shards with his name on Google - he was listed as one of the "founders" of a society he didn't even know existed. It turned out that the society traced its own origins to a predecessor (and ad hoc) organization of editors and publishers that organized and ran a series of conferences aimed at providing a venue focused on serving the interest of attendees rather than those of authors or just "making the nut." We are not the first to observe that birth can be a novel (and messy) process. So, here is an explanation, and an apology.
