It was a beautiful fall day in September 1983 when I started my new job as Head of the Department of Management, Stevens Institute of Technology. As I read my mail for the first time I was greatly surprised by the announcement that Stevens was phasing out its undergraduate Industrial Engineering program. It seemed that the Mechanical Engineering Department was starting a Manufacturing Engineering program and was concerned that the IE program would take students away. Since Stevens was the founding school for Mechanical Engineering its opinion carried a lot of weight. On the other hand, Frederick Winslow Taylor was a Stevens graduate and is the father of Industrial Engineering. What should I do to preserve this tradition?
