摘要

A bulging deformation is observed on the side plate of base-boxes of a centrifugal ethylene compressor in a refinery plant. Because the height reduction of the base-box induced by such deformation will affect the normal operation of the compressor-unit if beyond the permitted scope, research work was carried out by means of numerical simulation and experimentation to identify the possible causes of the deformation. The results indicated that the bulging deformation of side plates is the consequence of cyclic plastic deformation, which is caused by icing and thawing in the chamber of the base-box, accumulated for a long time, The deformation of the base-box will not grow continuously under the working condition, and will not influence the normal operation of the compressor. It is suggested that the box need not be replaced until the next overhaul and an opening should no longer be present in the top plate of the new base-box.
