The effect of erode oil (Bonny Light, SG 0.8343) pollution of soil and successive planting in the same soil at 6-week intervals, on seedling emergence and growth of tannia cocoyam (Xanthosoma sagtttifolium L, cv Edeocha) was studied. Five levels (0, 1, 2, 3 and 4% w/w) of oil pollution in soil and five successive plantings in the bagged soil were used in 5 X 5 factorial experiment. The cocoyam response (in terms of seedling emergence, height and dry matter weight) appears to be similar at I and 2% oil in soil, but different when the concentrations were 3 and 4% oil in soil. It took 12 weeks for tannia cocoyam cv Edeocha to grow in 1 and 2% oil polluted soils, as in the control. In 3 and 4% oil pollution of soil, it took 18 weeks Tannia cocoyam therefore has a high phyto-rernediative potential in soils that are oil-polluted to the order of 4%.
