An experiment was conducted in pre-kharif and kharif seasons in 2003 and 2004 in West Bengal, India to evaluate the residual effect of irrigation and mulch applied to previous groundnut crop on the yield and nutrient uptake of succeeding maize crop. Irrigation treatments were: rainfed (control); and 1, 2, 3 and 4 irrigations. Mulching treatments included rice straw at 6 t/ha and without mulching (control). The highest cob yield was obtained when previous groundnut crop was supplied with 4 irrigations + mulching. The highest N, P and K leaf content and uptake in maize were obtained under 3 irrigations + mulching.
