Tracheal perforation in horses is mostly reported as a result of a kick by another horse. Blunt tracheal trauma may also occur when a horse hits a fence or other obstacle at high speed. Tracheal transection, however, is associated with injuries caused by sharp objects. The superficial anatomical position of the trachea, ventral to the middle cervical vertebrae, exposes it to trauma and perforation. Tracheal perforation is followed by air efflux into the subcutaneous tissues, causing variable degrees of subcutaneous emphysema in the head and neck region, depending on the size and origin of the perforation. Subcutaneous emphysema is often the first sign noticed by the owner and a common case history on presentation. This report describes a case of tracheal perforation associated with blunt trauma to the neck.
