Followhg conception, normal development of the embryo in utero involves the differentiation and growth of the integument, skeleton, alimentary tract, muscles, gaments and tendons, heart and blood vessels, endocrine organs and other diverse organ systems. These structures are composed of tissues that derive from a population of multipotent stem cells with the capacity to from "he parenchymatous cells characteristic of the organ in question. The fertilised egg can be viewed as a totipotent stem cell, capable of forming all elements of the body. Neoplasia is cell proliferation out of control and there is renewed interest in the hypothesis that some forms of cancer are stem cell proliferative disorders (Trosko 2009). the stem cell hypothesis of cancer has many attractive features which includes an ability to account for mixed ours, such as those of the sweat glands or mammary gancls which might contain a mixture of secretory epithelial and contractile myoepithelial cells.
