摘要

Neoplasia can cause equine colic that varies in severity and is either chronic or acute. Pain can be caused in several ways: the size and weight of the tumour itself can cause pain, usually by mesenteric traction, mesenteric rents caused by the tumours can result in intestinal strangulation, intraluminal tumours can cause intraluminal obstruction, adhesions of the serosal surface of bowel to the tumour can cause extraluminal obstruction, tumours that rupture can cause haemoabdomen, and pedunculated mesenteric tumours can cause intestinal obstruction or strangulation. When all causes of equine abdominal pain are examined, colic caused by neoplasia is relatively uncommon. However, in the last decade or so, neoplasia causing colic is being encountered more frequently because horse owners and veterinarians are more willing to refer older horses for advanced medical and surgical treatment.
