Veterinary investigation of equine neurological diseases has traditionally been hampered by economic and practical considerations. In addition, clinicians may be somewhat hesitant to suggest referral and further expensive tests when they consider thatthe prognosis is guarded (or hopeless) whatever the final diagnosis. Such considerations are of course important and decision making as to the appropriate way to manage and investigate cases should always be made on an individual basis with the animal'swelfare being paramount. However, for many horse owners, the pursuit of anfe mortem diagnosis for their animal is entirely appropriate, indeed expected, in an age when the lay public knows what is available in human and small animal medicine. In addition, ante mortem diagnosis may be required for insurance claims. Finally, the use of additional diagnostic tools satisfies the intellectual curiosity of the clinician and may offer the possibility of treatment options: it is often only through the carefulselection and investigation of cases and their attempted management that veterinary medicine progresses.
