Intraosseous infusion (IOI) is used in human paediatric and emergency medicine when rapid access to the systemic circulation is required and peripheral or central venous access is not possible or would be too time-consuming (Iserson and Criss 1986; Parrish et al. 1986; Glaeser et al. 1988; Macnab et al. 2000). Indications for IOI include haemodynamic collapse (e.g. severe hypovolaemia, cardiopulmonary arrest), severe burns, oedematous states, morbid obesity and peripheral thrombosis. In experimentalanimal studies in which hypovolaemia was induced, the intraosseous route compared favourably with the intravenous (i.v.) route in terms of delivery times to the central circulation and correction of haemodynamic indices altered by hypovolaemia (Orlowskiet al. 1990; Neufeld et al. 1993; Warren et al. 1994; Kentner et al. 1999).
