摘要

The level of species richness, taxonomic structure, and regional composition of the fauna on the plateau of Devon Island (75° N, 400 m above sea level) correspond to those characteristic of animal groups in the polar desert zone. The total species richness of the fauna is approximately 200 species, including four species of mammals, three species of nesting birds, 60-70 species of insects, 11 species of springtails, 5 species of spiders, and approximately 50 species of mites. The diversity of insects in the terrestrial arthropod complex is drastically reduced against a background of an increased proportion of springtails and spiders, whose total species number is comparable with that of insects. The entomofauna does not contain Hemimetabola or Coleoptera, and the composition of Lepidoptera and Hymenoptera is extremely poor, whereas Diptera prevail (about 50 species). The majority of species recorded on the plateau belong to the category of euaretic species, some of them bearing features of hyperarctic species.
