Factors affecting endoglucanase activity (EA) in the forestomach and cecum of common voles Microtus arvalis and M. rossiaemeridionalis were studied. EA was measured by the viscosimetric method. Its dependence on a number of factors was analyzed usingthe Statistica software package. These factors included animal sex, body length and weight, physiological state (pregnancy and lactation), the weight of the digestive tract as a whole, and the weight of the forestomach and cecum separately. In addition,some ecological factors (season, time of day, and site of capture) were taken into account. The correlation between EA in the cecum and the physiological state of the animal (lactation) and food composition, as well as the correlation between EA in the forestomach and cecum, proved to be statistically significant. A tendency toward species specificity of EA was revealed, which probably reflected differences in food preference between the two species. The average EA values in the forestomach and cecum were 24.4 and 79.5 (imol/min per gram of chyme, respectively. Symbiotic microorganisms in the digestive tract of voles appeared to be highly tolerant of changes in the physiological state of the host animal (pregnancy and the degree of fullness of the digestive tract).
