I had been riding for nearly 25 years before I ever sat on a gaited horse, a remarkably smooth Peruvian Paso. It felt a little strange, as if she were on roller skates, but it also was wonderful. The encounter piqued my interest in easy-gaited breeds,but it wasn't until 1997 that I realized I was destined to be involved with horses who do more than trot. That year my nongaited Morgan mare threw a naturally gaited foal, and I helped launch The Gaited Horse magazine, serving as its editor until we published our final issue this summer. In the past 10 years, I've learned volumes about gaited horses, and I always enjoy sharing what I know. Some of my most rewarding experiences have come while watching people ride a gaited horse for the first time. It's very satisfying to see their eyes light up as they realize there is so much more to discover.
