For the reliable detection of potential gas leakages in. public gas grids, odorants have been employed for years. In some EU countries, the natural gas is odorised throughout the entire distribution grid and gas transportation network, whereas the majority of EU countries, including Germany, exclusively odorize local gas distribution grids immediately directed toward the consumer. Gas trunk lines as well as caverns and porous media employed for gas storage are thus free of odorants. In conjunction with cross-border gas transport in the EU, however, the effects of odorants on surface and underground installations for gas storage must be examined. The following odorants are considered in this publication: THT (tetrahydrothiophene) alone and in mixtures with TBM (tert-butyl mercaptan), as well as sulphur-free products on an ethyl acrylate basis.
