Drilling projects are becoming more challenging, with the demand for faster and longer runs in more complex well profiles. These challenges lead to higher loads, in particular dynamic loads such as vibration of downhole drilling system components. In addition, environmental factors like temperature or aggressive mud are stressing the drilling tools. Drilling tools must survive these challenging conditions while maintaining expected drilling performance and reliability. This article provides an overview of methods used in the design and operational phases to meet customer demand for reliability and performance with respect to mechanical loads.
