Overall, the International Charter for Space and Major Disasters was invoked40 times in 2008. Data from the ERS and Envisat missions were used to provideproducts such as updated location/classification/event extent maps for rescueoperations and post-disaster management. In the case of cyclone Nargis, EnvisatAdvanced Synthetic Aperture Radar data with 15o m pixel resolution wereused to assess the hydrological situation after the typhoon had passed. ASARdata have also been essential for damage assessment showing the impact ofhurricane Ike. In association with CNES and British National Space Centre, ESAorganised a workshop in December in ESRIN to promote and optimise the accessand use of satellite imagery for disaster response.
