Habitat suitability in fragmented landscapes: a fuzzy logic approach.

Problem of habitat fragmentation is considered as the main cause of loss of biodiversity, resulting in population decline and disappearance of species sensible to local transformations. Investigations were conducted in the whole of Tuscany, Italy, to identify animal species sensitive to habitat fragmentation. A conditional probability model was applied to studies of areas characterised in Corine Land Cover 2000 database. Data are tabulated on Corine classification of land use and fuzzy membership values for urban areas, agricultural areas, woodlands, shrublands, as well as wet zones and water courses. The results revealed the presence of 42 terrestrial mammal species, of which 14 were identified as focal species. Habitat suitability values are presented for the 5 land use types in relation to the occurrence of Canis lupus, Eliomys quercinus, Felis silvestris, Glis glis, Lutra lutra, Martes foina, Martes martes, Meles meles, Muscardinus avellanarius, Mustela nivalis, Mustela putorius, Neomys anomalus, N. fodiens and Sciurus vulgaris. Fuzzy logic based maps obtained with Landsat are included on high and low suitability values of the 5 land use types.
