thessaloniki—During the May meeting of the World Union of Wholesale Markets in Greece, key topics for deliberation included the importance of competition and the need to innovate in order to adapt to new modes of consumption.Held in the northern Greek city of Thessaloniki, the World Union of Wholesale Markets (wuwm) conference brought together 156 professionals from 26 countries on 14-16 May. The socio-economic role played by wholesale markets the world over was recognised,including their partin creating a positive environment for small and medium-sized businesses, linking companies with export markets and promoting entrepreneur-ship. Panagiotis Kakafikas, chairman and managing director of the Central Market of Thessaloniki, pointed out thatthe city's enviable location made it a suitable hub for international trade. The government's aim during the current economic difficulties was, he said, to create opportunities to spur on growth.
