ROTTERDAM—For Dutch importer Cool Fresh and its main South African citrus supplier Gogo / Eben Kruger Marketing, sustainability means removing chemicals from the supply chain equation.Gor as long as can be remembered, chemical compounds have been used to treat oranges after harvesting, but increased awareness of apparent harmful side-effects mean that their popularity is waning, to such an extent that a growing number of countries have banned their use. Now, Dutch importer Cool Fresh International says it is ready to supply chemical-free citrus with the same extended shelf-life as before: a sustainable option it feels retailers will find it hard to ignore.
