DESPITE an overall rise in worldwide demand for fresh figs, ever-increasing airfreight costs are hampering growth in exports from the Southern Hemisphere, according to Jon Cappelluti from Catania Chile. "Since the only method available for shipping figs is by air, our clients usually end up paying more in airfreight costs than the actual cost of a carton of fruit," he tells Eurofruit Magazine. "Hopefully these costs will return to a respectable level where we can begin shipping to the markets with good demand, rather than just exporting to destinations with the cheapest airfreight rates."
