Exporters had to contend with an estimated 30 per cent fall in production this season, writes. FREEZING temperatures led to a significant reduction in table grape production in Argentina in 2005/06 and delayed the start of the harvest by several days.Coupled with the shorter crops in Chile and South Africa, shippers were hopeful that key export markets would face less pressure than in recent years. Yet despite getting off to a strong start, prices dipped in early February and never recovered fully for the remainder of the season. Martin Valle of EGSA said exports were lower across all the main varieties, although shortages were more acute in white seedless grapes. "It has been a fairly unusual season, marred by delays to the start of the white seedless crop, which was down by about 30 per cent on the previous year," he tells Trade Latin America. "Red Globes were also later, and sizes were on the whole smaller, but the fall in production was not as pronounced."
