With Kenyan vegetable exporters struggling to compete against their North African counterparts, production of fruits such as the avocado may offer a viable alternative without doubt, Kenya will be better known to most European consumers as a supplierof variegated flowers and a host of vegetables, including snowpeas, sugarsnap peas and green beans, than for its fruit. However, owing to a combination of countless factors, the reverse may soon be true. Both the flower and vegetable sectors in the country are approaching or have already reached maturity, according to Dr macadamia nuts, pineapples, forestry and livestock. Having removed its coffee operations back in 2004, Kakuzi elected to further develop its avocado production in Kenya. The company now boasts some 4IOha of its own production area and also exports fruit grown by outgrowers across the country. There are plans to further expand avocado production in the future, using the additional arable land and water that is available.
