GUATEMALA'S Berry Committee is a voluntary group comprisingfive major blackberry producer-exporters, including Hortifresh, Total Fresh, Frutesa, Rio Bravo and Country Fresh. Since 1987/88, Guatemala has traditionally produced two blackberry varieties,Kiowa and Brazos. Some 90 per cent of volumes are currently exported to the US, while the UK, Italy and Central America account for the remainingio per cent of shipments. In 2006/07, the committee is keen to increase production ofthe high-yieldingTupi variety, which is well received on account of its enhanced colour, taste and shelf-life compared to traditional varieties. According to the group's vice-president Lorena de Aguero, the new variety should boost competitiveness on both the US and U K markets, where Mexico currently dominates.
