San jose— Faced with limited natural resources and ever more demanding consumers, banana growers face mounting pressure to develop more sustainable ways of producing. Costa Rica embarked on this road almost 40 years ago and as a result, says Jorge Sauma of Corbana, its industry is well positioned to withstand the challenges of the future.Long before sustainability became a hot topic, Costa Rica took the decision to found its modern banana industry on the principles of social and environmental responsibility and today the country can claim to be one of the most sustainable producers in the world.
