Madrid-The popularity of the furry green fruit means more Spanish and Portuguese producers are joining the label.The key to expanding the kiwifruit category is to deliver greater consistency in quality and ripeness, according to Joaquin Rey, commercial director at Kiwiberico. The label was set up by Spanish importer Euro-banan to supply its customers with locally-grown kiwifruit during the Southern Hemisphere's off season. Such is its popularity on the Iberian Peninsula that demand far exceeds domestic supply: between them, Spain and Portugal consume around 150,000 tonnes of kiwifruit a year, the bulk of this duringthe Northern Hemisphere production season. Their combined annual output, meanwhile, currently stands at just 35,ooo tonnes.
